Has the Glendale school district gone to far...?

    Glendale School District was very justified in the bullying situation. The school district invests $40,500 in the bullying program each year. The Glendale School District hired Hermosa Beach-based Geo listening to monitor social media accounts of 13,000 middle and high school students. The company monitors social media networks such as Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. Their responsibility is to look for any evidence of bullying, suicidal thoughts, racism, and vandalism.  If there is any negative information found, the campus of the student is alerted immediately and will handle the problem from then on. I feel that this a good idea. Think of how much safer the environment of the schools and communities would be. Whereas some may argue the Geo Listening company and the Glendale school district are violating students freedom of privacy, I disagree. The company is trying to accomplish the protection and safety of all students. This is an important issue that the school and company are doing a good job on. The district also wants to have access to social media accounts to check up on people. Overall, the district is addressing this topic with concern and serious attention that will hopefully have a positive outcome.

Stop bullying. Bad things arise from it.

All forms of bullying should be taken seriously

    If San Ramon Valley High School did this, I think we would benefit a lot. No school is immune to suicides and bullying. Even our own great San Ramon Valley has experienced this tragedy. By doing this, bullying will go down and stop. Everyone would be more respectful and loving towards each other. Our school and district both need this desperately. A local mother of a bullied Dougherty Valley High School teen said, "Bullying must stop. And in order to make it stop, we the community must get involved." Just a couple weeks ago, a girl from Dougherty Valley High School was taunted and bullied for a period of a month. This escalated to the point of a beating in the local park. By having Geo listening, this might have not happened. I think our school district needs and would benefit from monitoring of social media accounts. In schools, the safety and protection of students is most important.
